Q. How did the kimmidoll® phenomenon begin?
A. The kimmidoll® brand was conceived following a long standing passion with elegant decorative gift and homeware items inspired by Eastern culture. The traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls are a perfect example of this simplistic Eastern beauty.
Kokeshi dolls have been a Japanese cultural institution for over two centuries. Giving and receiving Kokeshi dolls dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan. A. The art of the Japanese Kokeshi doll dates back to the 17th century. Traditional Kokeshi are hand carved from wood and are very simple in their design with round heads and cylindrical limbless bodies. The floral and linear patterns painted on their kimonos have been developed and passed down through generations of Kokeshi makers and are distinctive to the area where they are made. All Kokeshi dolls share the philosophy that the pursuit of beauty and artistry is through simplicity and each Kokeshi emanates its own individual spirit from the artist who created it.
